“The Right to Decide: Lived Experience of People with Disabilities, Older Persons and HIV/AIDS” is a forum to share experiences and perspectives on the right to make decisions, which will be held on Friday, October 25, 2013.

People with intellectual disabilities, psychiatric consumer/survivors, older persons, and those living HIV/AIDS often have had their right to make their own personal, health care and property decisions legally and socially restricted, or removed all together.  As the Law Commission of Ontario and the Government of Ontario consider a new framework for regulating the right to legal capacity, it is essential to share perspectives and build a vision of how the right to decide – the right to legal capacity – should be recognized and supported in Ontario.

This forum will bring together people with lived experience of disability, aging and HIV/AIDS to do just that.  The purpose is to identify the issues people face in having their voices heard and decisions respected, and to explore ways to build a shared constituency for progressive law and policy reform on the right to legal capacity in Ontario.

This event is convened by School of Disability Studies, Ryerson University, The Empowerment Council & IRIS – Institute for Research and Development on Inclusion and Society.
